I lead the Distributed and Interactive Systems (DIS) group at Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica, CWI, (The National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science in the Netherlands) and I am Professor (“Human-Centered Multimedia Systems Chair) at TU Delft, in the Multimedia Computing group. My research combines human-computer interaction and multimedia systems, and focuses on modelling and controlling complex collections of media objects (including real-time media and sensor data) that are distributed in time and space.
My inaugural lecture at TU Delft, “Human-Centered Multimedia: Making Remote Togetherness Possible”, took place on May 20th 2022, and can be watched here. There was a symposium of two days (scientific retreat and seminar) on Human-Centered Multimedia to celebrate the event.
I received the prestigious 2020 Netherlands Prize for ICT Research because of my work on human-centered multimedia systems. “The jury praises Cesar for his impressive scientific achievements and his ability to communicate his research in an understandable way. Cesar reaches and inspires people inside and outside his field.” I am ACM Distinguished Member, longstanding ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Members cited for significant achievements across the computing field recognising up to 10 percent of ACM worldwide membership. I am as well IEEE Senior member, the highest grade for which IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) members can apply (top 10% of members).
I obtained my doctorate (2005) at Helsinki University of Technology, department of Computer Science and Engineering, and my Master’s (2002) at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
